I'm writing to share with you an inspiring experience I have had in the last month, just in case you need a little inspiration in these challenging times. I've been reading a just -published book called THE WAR BEFORE: THE TRUE LIFE STORY OF BECOMING A BLACK PANTHER, KEEPING THE FAITH IN PRISON & FIGHTING FOR THOSE LEFT BEHIND. "THE WAR BEFORE features the writings of the late Safiya Bukhari, who was born in New York City and joined the Black Panther Party in 1969. Imprisoned for nine years, for charges related to the Black Liberation Army, Bukhari was released in 1983 and went on to co-found the "New York Free Mumia Abu-Jamal Coalition' and other organizations advocating for the release of political prisoners. She died in 2003 at the age of 53." (Quote is from 'Remembering Safiya Bukhari -- an interview with Laura Whitehorn' in the Angola 3 News.Feb. 2010. http://angola3news.blogspot.com ) Safiya's writings are edited by Laura Whitehorn, also a former political prisoner, imprisoned for her uncompromising solidarity with anti-racist, anti-imperialist struggles, especially those of the Black Liberation movement of the 1970's. Her story is powerfully told in the film, 'Out: The Making of a Revolutionary.' Laura's political and literary editing of Safiya's writings is, in my opinion, as inspiring as the writings themselves. Detailed footnotes give the reader a comprehensive, analytical understanding of the movements from which Safiya came, and which she supported. Laura juxtaposes Safiya's writings from different periods of her life in order to show the development of Safiya's political perspectives around particular themes. Laura says of her first meeting with Safiya: "I (first) met Safiya in the visiting room of the Federal Correctional Institution (where Laura was imprisoned) in Dublin, California in 1997 -- but when we embraced, it felt as if I'd known her all my life. At the time, Safiya was traveling to various prisons, visiting political prisoners to talk with us about Jericho 98, the national campaign, beginning with a march and rally to the White House... (Safiya co-founded Jericho 98 as a national organization to support political prisoners)... 'Safiya lived her politics, exuded solidarity from every pore and in every fiber of her being...." (in 'Remembering Safiya Bukhari -- an interview with Laura Whitehorn ) As I read THE WAR BEFORE into the wee hours of every morning for a week, I found myself imagining anti-racist study group discussion questions based on chapters of THE WAR BEFORE, supplemented with a showing of the video 'OUT: THE MAKING OF A REVOLUTIONARY. Both works, I think, can help keep us keepin' on in these challenging times.
